Yahoo Sports hires former Olympians as correspondents for Paris 2024

By Movieguide® Contributor

With the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris just around the corner, many sports and news agencies are considering how to compete with NBC, the “exclusive rights partner” in the United States.

Yahoo Sports is hoping its star-studded lineup of former Olympians will draw viewers.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, “The sports platform has hired seven-time Olympic gold medalist Allyson Felix, who will cover and analyze track and field events; three-time gold medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings, who will cover beach volleyball; five-time gold medalist Missy Franklin and silver medalist Katie Hoff, who will cover swimming events; and gold medalist Shawn Johnson East, who will cover gymnastics events for Yahoo.”

Ryan Spoon, CEO of Yahoo Sports, met with The Hollywood Reporter to discuss what his company was looking for.

“This sounds totally obvious, but you have to think about what is important to the fans,” he said. “They are at the top of the list in terms of ability, personality, results, knowledge and interest. And the other interesting aspect that I think is really important is that they are all ambassadors for their sports.”

“They’ve all done it at the highest level with absolute success, I think they’re all multiple Olympians. So what does it mean to do it overseas? What does it mean at these different levels and with these different personalities?” he continued. “And we were lucky because we didn’t have to go down the list – these are people that are important to any fan of these sports, they would be the top names to help with.”

Each athlete will analyze the events, interview athletes and host various features.

Despite this major move by Yahoo Sports, the company will continue to rely on its partner NBC Sports.

“Obviously, we try to serve as many fans as possible first and you do that by scaling,” Spoon explained. “We have relationships with everyone. We strive to create the best content for written analysis, deliver the results, deliver personality, do video and do that on social media. But we also recognize that personally – whether we’re the best in the world or not – we can’t be comprehensive there ourselves and so we’re looking for partners to help us do that.”

Movieguide® previously reported on Johnson East’s Olympic experience:

Former gymnast Shawn Johnson had the incredible experience of competing in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, where she won one gold medal and three silver medals.

In an interview with Fox News Digital, Johnson reflected on her time at the game.

“It was the greatest honor of my life at the time,” she said.

“To be able to wear the red, white and blue, to see the flag being lowered, to hear the national anthem, to put my hand on my chest,” she added. “I had dreamed of this moment my whole life. And to be able to do this not only for myself, but for my coaches, my team and our country, it was a very special moment. It felt very special.”
