Colorado Springs, Colorado (June 11, 2024) – The sitting USA women’s team returned to international play for the first time since July 2023 and picked up right where they left off – with a win. The US women, currently ranked No. 3 in the world, opened the World ParaVolley Super 6 with a 3-1 (25-18, 24-26, 25-21, 25-22) victory over No. 2 ranked Brazil.

The United States (1-0) will face No. 7 Italy on Wednesday, June 12, at 7 a.m. PT. Italy defeated France 3-0 the previous Tuesday.

U.S. head coach Bill Hamiter fielded a group of experienced athletes to compete against Brazil: five-time Paralympian Lora Webster, four-time Paralympians Heather Erickson and Katie (Holloway) Bridge, three-time Paralympians Monique Matthews and Kaleo Kanahele Maclay, two-time Paralympian Bethany Zummo and 2016 Paralympian Tia Edwards.

Brazil and the USA were close at the start of all four sets. Both teams took advantage of their runs but saw their opponents catch up. The USA pulled away midway through the first set and won 25-18, but Brazil didn’t give up. In the second set, Brazil earned a set point at 24-23, but the USA recovered and tied it at 24-24. Brazil scored the next two points and won 26-24.

The USA rallied in the third set, led by Erickson, who led the USA team with 22 points from 19 kills, two blocks and an ace. The set was close until the USA pulled ahead to 22-19 and Erickson won the set a few points later with a kill to make it 25-21.

Brazil threatened to take the match to five sets in the fourth set with leads of 15-12 and 18-15, but each time the USA fought back and eventually won 25-22.

“It was a great start to this Super 6 tournament,” said Hamiter. “We were challenged from the beginning and that is exactly what we need in preparation for the Paralympics. We had to be very combative and we held our own well. It is always good to get a win, especially against the number 2 in the world.”

Bridge was a force at the net, leading the team with six blocks and ten kills. Webster added five kills and five blocks and Matthews scored nine points with five kills, three blocks and an ace.

Nicky Nieves started sets three and four and added firepower with eight points from six kills and two blocks. Maclay scored six points from four kills and two aces. Edwards finished with a block and a kill.

As a team, the USA led Brazil in kills (50-44) and block points (19-16), but Brazil had the edge in aces, 5-4.

The games will be streamed on the World ParaVolley YouTube channel.
