Several women from the Midland area are participating in an all-women veterans honor flight to Washington, DC this week.

The flight, which departed from Bishop Airport in Flint on Tuesday morning and returns Wednesday evening, includes about 150 veterans from across the state. One of them is local pharmacist Julia Lauless, a veteran of both the Army and Air Force and currently regent of the John Alden Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Also in attendance are Denise Kearl and Doreen Lynn Reel of Midland; Ruthann Fuentes of Sanford; Melva Koepke and Marcia Voisine of Bay City; Denise Hoffman, Carla Wegner, Melissa Ann Seidel and Heather Lynn Curell of Saginaw; Lou Howard and Vicki Deanna Green of Mount Pleasant; Mary Margaret Baker and Lyn Marie Petrowski of Standish; Linda Welch and Delores Winquest of Pinconning; Dale Blunk of Merrill; Kari Lee Johnson of Essexville; Mikayla Gayle Badour of Au Gres; Ann Owens-Wolfe and Joann Tillman of Flint; and Karen Ciesielski of Flushing, to name a few.

Bob Green, president of Mid-Michigan Honor Flight, said this is one of only three honor flights in the United States for female veterans. Mid Michigan has partnered with Talons Out Honor and Upper Peninsula Honor Flight to organize this special flight.

“There are over 46,000 female veterans in Michigan and less than 1% of them have participated in an Honor Flight,” Green said. “We wanted to change that and offer them a flight that honors them for their service.”

The trip, which like all Honor Flights is free for all veterans, includes a visit to the Women in Military Service Memorial, Green said.

The mission of Mid-Michigan Honor Flight is to “transport American veterans to Washington, DC so they can visit the memorials erected in honor of their sacrifices.”
