Ten authors have the dubious honor of having written the most banned books in Iowa.

The Des Moines Register conducted an exclusive investigation to track the impact of Senate File 496, a 2023 education bill that would require library materials to be “age-appropriate” and ban most books depicting sexual acts from Iowa’s schools. The sweeping bill also restricts curriculum on sexual orientation and gender identity through sixth grade.

The Register documented nearly 3,400 book removals in Iowa as a result of this law. The removals included about 1,000 unique book titles by about 600 authors.

Among the hundreds of authors affected by Iowa’s book ban are successful romance novelists, award-winning writers and popular young adult authors.
