Lionsgate secured the rights late last year and has wasted absolutely no time in getting the project off the ground. King’s The long way was first published in 1979 and appeared under his alternate pseudonym Richard Bachman. Over the years, people like George A. Romero, André Øvredal and even Frank Darabont have tried – and failed – to bring the book to the screen. Last year we learned that Francis Lawrence, by The hunger Games Fame, was tapped by Lionsgate to direct the film. It looks like he will be the one to make it across the finish line. JT Mollner (Strange darling) wrote the screenplay. For those who may not know it, the synopsis of the novel is as follows:

“In the near future, when America has become a police state, one hundred boys are chosen to participate in an annual contest in which the winner will receive anything he wants for the rest of his life. The game is simple – maintain a steady walking pace of four miles per hour without stopping. Three warnings and you’re out – forever.”

There will be a whole lot of King films in the next few years. Elsewhere, the long-delayed Salem’s Lot The film is coming to the Max streaming service later this year.
