The Day the Earth Exploded: A Looney Tunes Movie had an unforgettable day with its premiere on Tuesday.

The film premiered during a late-night event at the Annecy Animation Festival in France, where director Pete Browngardt and Warner Bros. Animation president Sam Register took the stage to introduce the film, which centers on Looney Tunes main characters Porky Pig and Daffy Duck (both voiced by Eric Bauza). The day the earth exploded comes from Warner Bros. Animation and is scheduled to hit theaters this year, but a release date has not yet been announced.

The film generated enthusiastic laughter throughout the screening. There were several moments that stuck with the audience, including scenes that dealt with the main duo’s childhood and their attempts to find a job. The day the earth exploded shows the two characters teaming up to prevent a powerful alien from taking control of the planet. The situation becomes complicated when Porky develops an interest in Petunia Pig (Candi Milo).

Browngardt (Uncle Grandpa) noted that this is his fifth year participating in the animation festival. “This is a labor of love not only for me, but also for the entire team of artists who worked on it,” the filmmaker said of his film. “I hope all Looney Tunes fans enjoy it.”

He continued: “It’s been a long journey. We’ve been working on it for four years. It’s 2D animated. We put our heart and soul into it, so I hope you enjoy it tonight.”

Addressing the crowd, Register praised Browngardt’s vision for the project. “Annecy is the best place to premiere this film because the Looney Tunes are very important characters,” Register said. “This is a very important film because these characters mean so much to us and to the animation community. There was no one I would have trusted more to make a feature-length animated film about these characters than Pete Browngardt.”

The day the earth exploded is the first fully animated Looney Tunes film to be released in theaters. Its premiere follows Warner Bros.’ recent decision not to release the film.
