Paul Johansson reflects on how Dan Scott’s portrayal in OneTreeHill Impact on his mental health.

On Tuesday, the 59-year-old WB alumnus appeared in Trying to figure it out with Ally Petitti Podcast. The episode, titled “Finding a Way Out with Paul Johansson, the Infamous Villain of One Tree Hill,” focused on the depression and alcoholism he struggled with while filming the series, which aired from 2003 to 2012.

“It was horrible,” he said. “I never spoke about it, I was deeply depressed and I was drinking. I drank a couple of bottles of wine every night by myself. It was really hard for about six or seven years.”

Johansson played Dan, the controlling father of basketball prodigies Nathan Scott (played by James Lafferty) and Lucas Scott (Chad Michael Murray). Like his brother, Lucas was a talented player but an outsider.

Set in the fictional town of Tree Hill, North Carolina, the series was one of Sophia Bush’s breakout roles as Brooke Davis, a high school cheerleader and later, over the course of the series’ nine seasons, a businesswoman.

“It was just a time when I think I was absorbing the energy of people looking at me and thinking of me as something bad,” Johansson explained. “To get out of that, the show had to end for me. I had to get out and take on other characters and feel other things, but then I got villain roles again because of that show. It pigeonholed me.”

The television drama celebrated its 20th anniversary in September.

On this occasion, some of the actors paid tribute to the series, which has gone down in pop culture history.

“Happy 20th, Fam. No. 3,” Murray, 42, said in a social media post that ‘One Tree Hill’s theme song “I Don’t Want to Be” by Gavin DeGraw. The actor added, “If you had asked me in 2003… Not even in my wildest dreams would I have thought we would still have this magical connection. I’m grateful.”

Bethany Joy Lenz, who played Haley James Scott, was unable to directly name the show due to the SAG-AFRA strikes and instead celebrated 20 years of “female friendships.”

“I will not mention the job that turns 20 years old today while our union is on strike,” she began.

“So instead I’ll be celebrating 20 years of female friendships being the ultimate love stories and @dramaqueensoth’s reclaiming of our good, bad, ugly and beautiful. Thank you to our #Fanfam for encouraging us to find and use our voices on and off screen. #Lucky23 #20years.”

And even though the show ended two decades ago, something special could be brewing.

Earlier this month, Murray spoke with EHR! Message about the possibility of a restart.

“Something is going to happen. Whether we bring everyone together and do a live reading of the show or create a new fictional episode for the future, I don’t know what it will be,” he told the outlet.
