Michigan State basketball has had an assistant coaching position open for several months now that Mark Montgomery has been the new head coach at Detroit Mercy. Tom Izzo said he would take his time with the hire, and he has.

But on Thursday the new Spartan coach was announced and I am very happy about this new hire.

Saddi Washington comes to Michigan State University after eight years at Michigan State University, where he was very successful under John Beilein and Juwan Howard and was once named 247Sports Recruiter of the Year.

Before his time at Michigan, Washington spent ten seasons in Oakland with Greg Kampe, a close friend of Izzo.

Washington was one of my favorites for the next assistant position at Michigan State and Izzo’s hiring is just an outstanding accomplishment. Washington brings a lot of youth to the team, which I think MSU desperately needed. With that youth comes fresh ideas that will hopefully lift the Spartans out of the slump of the last few seasons. Washington is also one of the best recruiters in the country and that is never a bad thing.

Washington is also originally from Lansing and is the son of former Spartan star Stan Washington, so even though he was at Michigan for a while, I feel like his heart was always at Michigan State.

The newest assistant will have a lot to do once he officially arrives on campus, as the Spartans’ 2025 recruiting class is still empty. But I imagine the impact of this hire will be felt immediately, and this could very well help put Michigan State back at the top of the Big Ten.
