HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – Police say a 15-year-old is responsible for shooting a popular Houston-area softball coach while trying to steal his truck.

The above video is from an earlier report.

Investigators said the shooting occurred on March 31, Easter Sunday, outside the victim’s home in an apartment on the South Beltway near Pearland.

The victim is 42-year-old Ivan Ramirez, coach of the Texas Magic Fastpitch Travel softball team.

Investigators said a witness reported seeing a suspect in a yellow hoodie scouting Ramirez’s car and later saw the same person drive away in a gray pickup truck after the shooting.

Houston police said they identified the suspect as a 15-year-old, but are not releasing the teen’s identity because of his age.

According to HPD, the teenager was charged with felony battery and arrested on June 6.

Investigators said Ramirez was at home in an apartment complex on Easter Sunday when an app on his phone alerted him that the door to his truck had been opened.

HPD said when he came outside to investigate, the 15-year-old allegedly shot him multiple times.

Investigators said Ramirez’s wife found him bleeding on the floor.

Ramirez was admitted to Ben Taub Hospital, underwent numerous surgeries and was in critical condition before he died weeks later.

A GoFundMe was set up to help the family with expenses.
