The odds for Colorado to win the national championship are a hot topic in sportsbooks across America, with Coach Prime and the Buffs now having the fourth-highest odds to win the College Football Playoff this year, according to BetMGM.

This comes less than 100 days before the season starts and the odds are going from +20,000 to +12,500, according to BetMGM’s John Ewing. Bettors are throwing huge sums of money on the table in the hopes of winning a huge payday for a change, like they did last year. It’s another side of the “prime effect,” where the masses believe in what Deion Sanders is building in Colorado.

This is the first year the College Football Playoff will include the 12-team format. Colorado returns to the Big 12 after 14 years of mostly struggling in the Pac-12. Without Texas or Oklahoma on the schedule, there are still winnable games down the stretch. The Buffs, however, will not have consecutive home games in the entire conference schedule. It will be a matter of evening the streak without looking too far ahead.

Sanders and Colorado are coming off a bittersweet 2023 season that ended with a 4-8 record and six straight losses. What gets lost in that is the Buffs’ 1-8 record in the Pac-12 Conference last year. Add to that another complete roster turnover, and there will be a lot of work to do to make the playoffs.

Colorado opens the season against FCS powerhouse North Dakota State on Thursday, August 29 at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN, then follows two consecutive road games against rivals Colorado State and Nebraska to round out the non-conference portion of the schedule.
