Firefighters have ordered evacuations near a fire burning around Twin Lakes near Leadville in Lake County.

By 6 p.m. Tuesday, the fire had already spread to 165 acres. The fire was raging 12 miles southwest of Leadville. Emergency crews from the Leadville Ranger District are on site.

Firefighters showed images showing a large plume of smoke. People near Interlaken and County Road 25 are urged to evacuate, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said.

Residents in the area of ​​Lost Canyon Road and County Road 30 are being told to prepare to leave. Temporary evacuation orders are also in place for residents along Lost Canyon Road as far north as Balltown.

Evacuees can seek shelter at the 6th Street gym in Leadville and learn about firefighting efforts. The Lake County Health Department says volunteers are not needed at this time.
