Local car enthusiasts present themselves at the first Father’s Day car show Cameron Bailey talks about TIFF’s market plans and China connections

Father’s Day is just around the corner and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated (AKA) plans to honor the men in their lives by planting a tree in their honor.

In support of their international “Improve Our Environment” initiative, the Rho Xi Omega Chapter of AKA will partner with the Baltimore City Department of Public Works (DPW) GROW Center Pop Up to host an event giving away free trees, mulch, and more.

AKA is an international service organization founded in 1908 at Howard University, making it the oldest Greek organization founded by college-educated African-American women. It has over 355,000 members in chapters in 11 countries around the world.

The Improve Our Environment initiative aims to be a catalyst for its members to make a meaningful impact on the environment and encourage the adoption of sustainable and responsible practices. The program’s focus areas include tree planting, community and home gardens, waste reduction, and recycling days for electronics and document shredding.

The GROW Center stands for Green Resources & Outreach for Watersheds. It is a program of the Baltimore City DPW and serves as an information center for residents to learn about greening their neighborhoods, stormwater management, waste reduction, and beautification projects.

Participants can bring up to two 115-liter bags of paper documents for shredding. In addition, they can bring room air conditioners, dehumidifiers, electronics and mini-fridges for recycling.

The event is free and open to the public and will take place on Saturday, June 15, 2024, from 8 a.m. to noon at Middle Branch Fitness & Wellness Center, 201 Reedbird Avenue, Baltimore, MD.
